The drink that never interrupted.

Sprite didn't win India by fighting for attention between the moments that matter. It attached itself to a behaviour India already performed daily — eating heat — and became the drink that moment reaches for. Then Coca-Cola turned the same read into official global strategy.

Pathway · Borrow (Behavioural Embedding) Told in Episode 3 Mechanism: Supported — the loop is interpretation India → Global · 2022–2025
The context

A category that fights for attention between the moments that matter.

Soft drinks are meant to win by standing out — bigger campaigns, louder ad breaks, standalone refreshment imagery. Sprite's India play was quieter: occasions, not interruptions. Not celebrity. Not volume. The meal.

$1B

Annual sales in India, crossed in 2022 — with the success attributed by Coca-Cola's CEO to "locally-adapted, occasion-based marketing."

>⅓

Of India's non-cola sparkling segment, with the highest household penetration in Coca-Cola's India portfolio.

The mechanism

Borrow the attention the meal already owns.

creates repeat

India already performed the behaviour daily: eating heat. The drink stops being a separate choice — it becomes part of the eating system. No ad break required; the meal supplies the attention, the product supplies the resolution. That's the Borrow pathway in its purest form: enter a ritual culture already owns, as its low-friction complement.

The same pattern, a generation apart: Cadbury Celebrations didn't fight mithai — it joined the Diwali gifting ritual (1999), entered every good-news moment (2004), and later stacked a rented spike on twenty years of embedding (2021). Borrowed rituals compound.
The strongest evidence

Three years later, Coca-Cola made it official global strategy.

The strongest validation a strategy read can get is the company itself formalizing the mechanism — with money, partners and a 180-market platform.

2022 · India

$1B brand, built on occasion-based marketing; India platform "Thand Rakh" runs the heat-relief position multi-year.

2024 · UK

Sprite officially positioned in retail as "the wingman to spicy food."

Jul 2025 · Global

"Hurts Real Good" — Sprite × spicy food as a global platform with McDonald's, Buldak and Takis; spicy food named a core cultural pillar of the 180-market "It's That Fresh" platform. The cited stat — 50% of Gen Z eat spicy food weekly — is Sprite-cited, not independent, and we say so.

The honest column

What this case does not prove.

Fragilities & open tests — held in public
  • The behaviour is sourced; the loop is interpretation. Spice→need→relief→repeat is our read of documented behaviour, labelled Supported, not measured causation.
  • The occasion attribution is Coca-Cola's own. The CEO attributed the $1B success to occasion-based marketing — a self-assessment we quote as attribution, not as independent measurement.
  • A popular desi-Chinese theory was cut. No public source ties Sprite India to Indian-Chinese food specifically — so it isn't on this page. What can't be sourced doesn't ship.
  • Embedding has a boundary: it enters a ritual culture already owns. Forced fits get rejected — the ritual chooses, not the brand.
The decision implication

The embedding questions, before your next brief.

1

What behaviour already repeats in your audience's day?

2

What tension does it carry that your product plausibly resolves?

3

What role can the brand naturally play — without forcing the fit?

Don't ask people to think of you. Make the moment need you.
